Recruit adult participants on Prolific

Procedure

  1. Make sure you have open time slots on the scheduling platform
    • For adults, we try to open slots for the same day!
  2. Open as many slots on Prolific as you need
    • Click on the Action button on the study’s Prolific page and select Increase places from the drop down menu
  3. Once participants sign up, they will appear under “Awaiting review”
  4. Add new sign-ups to the designated subject log
    • Include the participant’s Prolific ID and scheduled date and time for testing
    • Mark their status as “Scheduled”
  5. Although the scheduling service will send the participant an email confirmation with the date and time of their study, as well as the Zoom link, it can be useful to remind participants about their upcoming studies a little bit in advance, especially if they are scheduled later in the day
    • Message them something along these lines (directly in Prolific):

Dear [participant name], thank you for signing up for our study. This is a friendly reminder that we will be meeting today at [time] EST at this Zoom link: [link]. If you need to reschedule, please look out for more openings in the future! Warmly, [RA name]

  6. Run the participant!

    FAQs

    • What should I do if the participant isn’t showing up a few minutes into the slot?

If the participant isn’t showing up 5-10 minutes into the slot, you may send a follow up message to remind them (with the Zoom link): Hi [participant name], I am waiting for you at the following link: [Zoom link]. Hope to see you soon!

    • What should I do if the participant does not show up at all?

If the participant doesn’t show up and doesn’t provide a warning or send a follow up message, you may reject their submission. List the reason for rejecting them as “Gave no study data”’ and on the subject log, mark them as “No show”. However, if a participant doesn’t show but asks to reschedule at the last minute, you may request a return of their submission on Prolific and let them know that they can look out for more openings in the future. In this case, you may mark their status in the log as “Will reschedule”.

    • What should I do once I run the participant?

Approve their submission on Prolific, and update the subject log by marking their status as “Complete” and that they have been approved. Finally, upload their recording to the database.
